Malvern Retreat

A year or so ago, Ken Johnston from Philadelphia PA and I did a radio interview about my book. After which, he asked if I’d be interested in leading their annual men’s retreat in Malvern PA. After a bit of prayer I thought, why not?

The city of brotherly love.

I was here back in 2015 when Pope Francis came to town. The big papal Mass was held by the art museum.

Once arrived, Ken and I had dinner with Fr. Doug McKay. Good men

Then settled in at the retreat center. Malvern Retreat House is a lay owned retreat center near Philadelphia. Founded in 1921, it is still going strong.

Technically it’s called St. Joseph’s in the Hills. Beautiful grounds and buildings.

About 125 men were at the three day retreat. Young and old.

My goal was to teach the Catholic Cowboy Way. Worked out, I think. Three big talks, Three homilies, and many conversations in between.

And of course, celebrate Mass each day. The source and summit of the Christian life.

Thanks Blessed Mother.

Fun stuff. I’m thankful for this opportunity. I probably received as much on the retreat as I gave. Special thanks to Ken and Fr. McKay. Sometimes a guy needs to get pushed into the deep end. On to the next one

  1. What joy! I am certain that Saint Paul enjoyed the spirituality, celebration of the Mass, and wonderful Christian fellowship on his mission journeys, just as you have shared in this Travel Journal entry. And I bet the Apostle Paul admired the "horse carriages" of his day too! Thank you and God bless you, Father Bryce, and the entire mystical body (and real people) of Church of Jesus Christ. And God bless us everyone!

  2. Father, thanks so much for your, "Yes!". Not only to the do the retreat but for your priesthood. The men from the retreat weekend are still talking about their experience - staying in the saddle, not thinking about the last "buck", etc. Something tells me you'll be doing more retreats!

  3. I was blessed to be on this retreat. It was an amazing experience - hard to believe it was Fr. Bryce's first full-scale retreat. He certainly has a gift for it, and I hope that many others will get to experience Fr. Bryce as their Retreat Master in the future. He fed us spiritually, and taught us many things. My favorite was his talk on Prayer: Thoughts - Feelings - Desires. Thank you again Father. I'll look you up next time I'm in Wyoming - and of course you're always welcome here in Philly!
