The horses have been running with cows this winter. This makes them hard to feed, unless I want to feed the cattle too or daily come out and pitch them hay. Neither of which I am too fond of. So when I came out to check on them today, the ranch manager and I came up with a good idea.
These meadows are getting thin. With a couple weeks of good cold weather, I really want the horses' bellies to be full.
As Buck and I were talking things over out the truck window, we decided to open a gate and let them graze on the long grass in the highway pasture.
This was new territory for me, though I've driven by it a lot traveling down Klondike Road south of Buffalo. Before I opened the gate, I thought I better run the fence.
White Horse was my pony of choice. Smooth ride and good heat. Here we opened the gate into the hay meadows, which will allow the horses and cattle to come and go as them please.
A few honks of the horn and Buck and company came running.
Plenty of grass to nibble on up here. They have to walk a ways for water, but the exercise will do them good.
Enjoy kids.
What fun would it be if you didn't have to think creative? Not that this idea was rocket science. But it will nevertheless be a good move for the critters, especially with this cold weather staying around. On top of that, it gets Fr. Bryce out of the office, which is good for everyone. Keep on ranchin' in a free world!
