Holy Ground
Once a year the Diocese of Cheyenne's presbyterate gathers for a 5 day retreat. This year it was at Terra Sancta (Holy Ground) retreat center in the Black Hills. What a beautiful time to refresh our relationship with the Lord and His call to serve as priests. Today, on the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, I celebrate my 3rd anniversary of ordination to the priesthood. Couldn't be happier.
There are about 45 active priests in the state of Wyoming and a few retired soldiers that continue to help out. The Diocese of Cheyenne encompasses the 63 million acres of Wyoming as well as all of Yellowstone Park which dips into Montana and Idaho. With the population of the state pushing 600k, the ratio of priests to people is actually quite high compared to other dioceses. Every diocese throughout the world is oversaw by a successor to the Apostles. Ours is Bishop Steven Biegler.

A Cowboy's Horse
The best thing for the inside of a man is the outside of a horse. I've experienced this more than once in my life, but this time was unique. A horse not only brought out the best in me, but I also helped bring out the best in her. Relationship with creation is a marvelous gift the Lord has given us. However, it comes with great responsibility. Nothing speaks of that more than starting a colt.
There's no such thing as a self made man. We all learn from someone. My hat goes off to Paul Casey. Without him, Mollie would be a perpetual colt. In the beginning I asked him to teach me to teach her. That's exactly what he did. You're a natural teacher Paul. But more than that, you're a hand.

Summer's Here
With temperatures in the 80's and climbing, it was time to get the rest of the girls up to the Hills. And, has providence would have it, I was heading to Hulett to celebrate Mass anyway.
Just Another Day at the Office
Justin Holcomb had me out for an afternoon branding. Another opportunity to see a new operation, visit with some good folks, and just get dirty.

The Granddaddy of them All
Jason knows how to pick them. For the last two years his branding dates have been on Marian feast days. This year it was the Visitation. Hands down, the Kuhbacher branding is my favorite day of the year. Gorgeous day. Surprisingly green, thanks be to God. And not too hot. A fun time was had by all, but especially by Ernie and I.
The roundups went smooth. We gather them and then make the stampede into the portable corrals.
Once penned, the boys worm the cows and separate the calves.

A Mystery to be Explored
A problem you conquer and move on. A mystery, like the Trinity, you jump in and experience.
Mill Iron C
One thing I love about ranching is that everybody's operation is tailored for their particular needs and situations. No two ranches look alike. Ernie and I were blessed to experience yet another well oiled machine on Don Kinstetter's place north of Moorcroft.

Ranch Hard. Be Happy.
Dad had been chomping at the bit to get up here and do some ranchin. Which, worked out well for me because I was ready to put a ride on Mollie. So to kill two birds with one stone we grabbed the horses and a few cows and headed for Hulett.
